The film’s screenplay was originally written for Jim Carrey and contained more physical wit. When he was replaced by Ben Stiller, the writers adapted the story to a performance by an actor who was less physical than Carrey.

When Robert De Niro’s character talks to Ben Stiller about confidence, he also says that his 19 months in prison in Vietnam made him a patient man. This is a reference to the iconic film Journey to Hell’s End (1978), where De Niro’s character is captured by Vietnamese soldiers.
2 sequels and a reality show
Following its theatrical success, My Stepdad and Me ($305 million worldwide on a $55 million budget) spawned two sequels: My Stepdad, My Parents and Me (2004) and My Stepdad and Us (2010). The film also gave rise to it Me and My Family (Meet My People), which is an American reality show that aired in 2002 and 2003. This show is about men having to earn the trust and approval of the family of the woman of their dreams. There is also a famous lie detector! Note that Universal wanted to file a lawsuit against this show, but eventually backed down.
