Disney’s live-action Hercules gets a status update

Disney classics made my childhood better. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched each of these movies – all I know is that the VHS tapes were pretty worn out when my mom decided to donate them.

The fond memories always leave me with positive expectations regarding the live-action films the studio has released in recent years. I’m not a purist who thinks Disney would ruin their classics. On the contrary: I consider the films to be good tributes and a great way to use technology to your advantage.

And the vast majority of adaptations have proven successful. Taking Pinocchio AND Dumbo (and the hateful campaign against the black actress in The little Mermaid), the public seems to have accepted this new format very well.

As we have already reported here , Hercules is waiting for an adaptation! Announced in 2020, the live-action has had little information revealed since then. And now we found out why: the project hasn’t made any progress.

In an interview with Total moviereleased late last week, brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, producers of the film, explained what’s going on:

“We’re still waiting for a script”the two confirmed.

With slow steps

The original live-action draft of Hercules was written by Dave Callaham (Mercenaries), but the producers are looking for a new professional to write a second version of the screenplay.

In 2022, the Russo brothers revealed that their idea is for the project to borrow from Disney’s original animation, but with some changes:

“I think we’ll do something that has the same feel of the original, that’s inspired by it, but introduces some new elements.”they stated.

The 1997 animation is, for many, one of Disney’s best because it broke some barriers at the time. Starting with the character Megara. She is more than the protagonist’s romantic interest. She is a woman of strong personality, acid humor and is far from being a damsel in distress.

The person responsible for bringing Megara and company back to the big screen will be director Guy Ritchie, also author of the beautiful live-action film Aladdin.

The cast has no names for now. There is also no release date.

Disney and adaptations

The information comes from Omelette.
