Knuckles, a spin-off series starring Sonic’s new partner, introduced new elements and helps further develop the red echidna
After the success of Sonic 2: The MovieParamount rushed to produce the first spin-off of the live action version of the hedgehog stories, but this time focusing on one of its partners. Knuckles premiered on Paramount+ and, in six episodes, served as a bridge to Sonic 3a feature film expected to premiere in late 2024.

The series starring the red echidna presented in Sonic 2 and who is voiced in his English version by Idris Elba (Circle of fire) picks up right where we left off the characters in the second film, with Knuckles still unable to adapt to Earth.
Together with Wade, a fearsome police officer who appeared in previous films, Knuckles embarks on a journey to learn more about the planet, but ends up becoming the target of renegade agents from GUN, an organization that monitors the entry of aliens onto the planet.
What happens at the end of Knuckles?
Over the course of the series’ six episodes, Knuckles begins to learn how worth staying on Earth is, making the planet his new home. This happens thanks to the friendship he creates with Wade, recognizing the value of humanity.
However, they will have to deal with the GUN agents, played by Kid Cudi (Westworld) and Ellie Taylor (Ted Lasso), who rebelled after the end events Sonic 2in which the organization stops trying to capture Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles and starts working with them to ensure the safety of the planet.
The two agents decide to capture Knuckles to sell him to the Buyer, the big bad of the series, played by Rory McCann (game of Thrones). The character is revealed as a former henchman of Dr. Robotinik who wants to use Knuckles’ power to get revenge for losing him position within GUN after the defeat of his former boss.
After a battle against the agents, Knuckles manages to get rid of them using two rings, opening portals that launch them to unknown locations. The Buyer uses armor that becomes stronger thanks to Knuckles’ powers.
In a fight on the streets of the city of Reno and with Wade’s help, Knuckles manages to destroy the armor by causing a massive structure to fall on top of the Buyer, ending the threat.
How does the ending relate to Sonic 3?
Although much has been said about how Knuckles would act as a bridge between the two Sonic 2 and its sequel, it’s surprising how tightly the series’ plot is locked, without much evidence of paths to follow in the future.
The big news is Knuckles’ evolution from a warrior who doesn’t understand the planet very well and doesn’t consider Earth his home, to ending up transforming into someone willing to fight to keep humanity safe.
Even without showing anything about Shadow, the villain who should be the center of attention in the third film, the series at least left Knuckles on equal footing with Sonic, as he managed to have equal or even better development than the hedgehog. Therefore, with the arrival of the new film in theaters at the end of the year, the echidna will already be integrated into his new reality and without the script having to waste time explaining how he is so accustomed to the human world.
Sonic 3 The premiere is scheduled for December 19th. All episodes of Knuckles are available on Paramount+.
