Tonight on Netflix: Released 24 years ago, this is one of the greatest animated films of all time

Set in the middle of medieval Japan, a young warrior prince named Ashitaka is injured and disfigured while fighting a demonic boar. Although a strange curse is placed on his arm, he decides to make his way west to find out the origin of this evil.

There he meets Princess Mononoke, who lives on the fringes of society alongside the wolf goddess Moro, then discovers a village of gunners and blacksmiths led by the courageous Lady Ebosh. Even if it means angering the spirits of the forest, the latter has sworn to make his people prosper by exploiting the resources of the surrounding soil.

One of the best Miyazaki

Released in Japan in the summer of 1997 (and in French cinemas just two and a half years later), Princess Mononoke is undoubtedly one of Hayao Miyazaki’s most outstanding works.

This master of Asian animation, who is also responsible for My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away (and who has just released his latest film, The Boy and the Heron), delivers an epic work, at once sensitive and delicate, that captures everything with dignity. The main themes of his career.

A tale that won over the audience

Less childish and more mature than some of his other films, this medieval and fantasy tale largely won the votes of the audience, as with an excellent average of 4,385 stars out of 5, it is the eighth best animated film of all time according to AlloCiné viewers (the same Miyazaki ranked Spirited Away in sixth place ).

Benefiting from absolutely sumptuous animation that captures the environmental themes of Walt Disney Japan (as it concerns an industrial village battling sylvan spirits), Princess Mononoke also benefits from a non-existent asset: a masterful score by composer Joe Hisaichi, who is probably besting his career here. The most beautiful work.
