The decline in beef consumption per capita decreased by 18.5% in the country in one year; a kilo of roast beef costs 8,300 pesos
The economic crisis is forcing Argentines to “give up” one of their most traditional symbols: the barbecue. In the country, beef consumption per inhabitant decreased by 18.5% in one year: it is the lowest level in the last 30 years.
The fact is reflected in the empty butcher’s shop. “We sell very little”, comments Alberto, at the counter of a business in the sector. Questioned by the Globo television service, he explains that there were six sales during the day. “Very little compared to before”when they reached 20 or 30 sales a day.
The butcher says he cannot explain to customers that he is forced to increase prices. He points out that a kilo of roast beef costs 8,300 pesos, while an employee earns between 200,000 and 230,000. Therefore he cannot pay for the meat.
Argentina: Livestock brought wealth to the country
This scenario would be bad in any other country. However, for one of the world’s largest beef exporters, things get even worse.
Cattle raising in Argentina dates back to the arrival of Spanish colonizers in the 16th century. And meat exports explain, to a large extent, the country’s phase of greatest growth, at the beginning of the 20th century, when the country was one of the richest in the world.
It was therefore for economic reasons that Argentina became famous for its barbecue, one of the best in the world according to renowned international chefs. The country’s middle class cannot afford meat: this is yet another bitter reflection of the economic crisis affecting the neighboring country.
