‘Baby Reindeer’: Why Did Martha Pretend To Text From An iPhone? The psychologist explains

“Baby Reindeer” is a series that has caught the attention of social networks in recent days, focusing on the strange and unhealthy relationship of Martha and Donny, who start talking after he invites her for a cup of tea in a bar.

Martha and her imaginary iPhone: A revealing detail in the ‘Baby Reindeer’ series.

Over time, their interactions become increasingly strange, as Martha begins to harass him, gifting him with strange objects and making inappropriate sexual projections that make Donnie uncomfortable.

Something that catches the attention of both the audience and the protagonist himself is that Martha is presented as an important lawyer who works with politicians in the UK. However, this begins to look unconvincing for two reasons. The first is that she looks unemployed as she spends all day chasing him and the second is that she insists she has no money, not even to pay for a cup of tea.

Although Donnie doesn’t think much of it at first, after Martha gets his email and starts texting him a lot, things take a turn for the worse. At this point, Donny notices that the texts always end with the phrase “Sent from my iPhone”.

Again, Donnie questions Martha’s financial situation since he has never seen her with this brand of cell phone. Additionally, he notices that the signature is sometimes misspelled, revealing that Martha never had an iPhone and was just pretending.

The psychologist reveals that Martha signed this way to maintain her “sense of belonging”

Why she seemed to be sending the emails from an iPhone was never explained in the ‘Baby Reindeer’ series, but psychologist Danielle Haig explained to LADbible why this could be when she analyzed the series and her personality Martha.

“His 40,000 emails, with that fake signature, are evidence not only of his obsession with Donny, but possibly his inability to come to terms with his new reality. The endorsement has less to do with the device itself and more to do with what it represents: a sense of belonging to a professional class and a world where she was respected and successful It is an attempt to project an image of stability and normality in contrast to her current life, although not existing may serve as symbolic link to its previous state’.

In other words, Martha wanted to maintain her previous identity as a wealthy top lawyer, even though she had been arrested for harassing her previous boss and had no money. Her signature plays with the idea that she wants to be seen as an important professional rather than a pesky woman who lives in a small, unkempt apartment.

Another theory that has surfaced online is that Martha possibly had Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, which would lead her to compulsively sign “Sent from my iPhone” to avoid feeling physically uncomfortable or even sick if she didn’t.
