In Brazil, the flu vaccine can be administered to all people over the age of 6 months, regardless of whether they belong to a priority group or not, following a decision by the Ministry of Health
Starting this week, everyone older than 6 months can get the flu vaccine Unified Health System (SUS). By widening the age range, the idea of the Ministry of Health is to increase vaccination coverage, which is low.

Until the moment of annual flu vaccination campaign, 14.4 million doses have been administered, which is still a few. This value represents 22% of the reference target, made up of 75.8 million people.
To be clear, before the Ministry of Health’s decision, flu vaccines were intended exclusively for priority groups, free of charge. This includes, for example, postpartum women, the elderly, children under five and people with comorbidities. Now even young people can take it.
Flu vaccine in SUS
“Vaccination is essential to protect the health of the population and prevent its spread [do vírus]particularly during the colder seasons, when the incidence of influenza tends to increase“, explains Nísia Trindade, Minister of Health, in a note.

In fact, vaccination is one of the best tools to prevent flu epidemics during the autumn and winter months. Those who are immunized have a lower chance of complications and hospital admissions if infected.
Where to get the flu shot?
When thinking about SUS, each city has the autonomy to define how vaccines will be applied, depending on the level of demand. If stocks are high, there is a greater probability that the expansion of the age range has already occurred.
So, before going to the Basic Health Unit (UBS) closest to your home to get vaccinated, it is important to check how the vaccination is going in your municipality: this can be done through the municipal social networks or by telephone.
For example, in the city of São Paulo, doses of the flu vaccine are available in all UBS for children older than 6 months, regardless of comorbidities.
However, in the north of the country, flu vaccination began in November last year. Therefore, the present states were not included in this new phase of the campaign.
