The President brought a delegation from the three branches of government: executive, legislative and judiciary to the state
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and the presidents of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL); of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG); and the Federal Audit Office (TCU), Bruno Dantas, landed at Canoas air base (RS) this Sunday (5). They will monitor rescue and assistance operations for flood victims in Rio Grande do Sul.
The governor of the state, Eduardo Leite (PSDB) received the delegation (see video below), also composed of 13 ministers, by the commander general of the Army Tomas Paiva; by the Minister of the Federal Court Edson Fachin; and the first lady Janja Lula da Silva.
The president brought representatives of the three powers to the state, which has recorded 75 deaths after a week of rain that left rivers overflowing and cities flooded. On a social network, Lula declared that he went to the state to “strengthen the work to support the people of Rio Grande do Sul”.
“We arrived in Rio Grande do Sul to strengthen the work of supporting the people of Rio Grande do Sul carried out by the federal, state and city governments”Lula posted on social media, accompanied by a video in which he talks to the governor after getting off the plane.
Lula’s second visit to RS
The president makes his second visit to Rio Grande do Sul since the response to the tragedy caused by the storms began. The president was in Santa Maria on Thursday (5). Leite said at the time that it was the state’s “largest climate disaster.”
The governor declared a state of calamity, recognized by the federal government, which set up a situation room in Brasilia and an office in Rio Grande do Sul to monitor the actions.
At the moment, relief efforts are concentrated in Porto Alegre and the metropolitan region, in the cities of Eldorado do Sul, Canoas and Guaíba.
