“Nine and a Half Weeks of Love” will be re-screened in theaters

1986 erotic drama with Kim Basinger will be re-released on the big screen, in celebration of the actress’ 70th birthday; film gained cult status after dark behind-the-scenes stories

The actress Kim Basinger turned 70 last December and, to celebrate the milestone, the A2 Films will re-release one of his most iconic films in cinema. Half past nineWeeks of Love will be reissued for the big screen in June 2024, especially for Valentine’s week.

Adapted from the novel of the same name released in 1978 by Ingebord Day, Nine and a Half Weeks of Love it was recorded in 1984 and released two years later. The plot revolves around the dark relationship between an employee at an art gallery (Basinger) who becomes involved with a mysterious Wall Street broker (Mickey Rourke).

A public failure in the United States, the film ended up gaining popularity in its screenings in Europe and Latin America. In São Paulo, Brazil, it ran for 30 weeks at the Cinema Belas Artesfrom 1986 to 1989 (via See São Paulo).

Part of the status he ended up receiving would come from behind-the-scenes stories, which were quick to appear. Directed by the British Adrian Lyne, Nine and a Half Weeks of Love would end up famous for the sinister atmosphere of the recordings, which would end up subjecting Basinger to situations of psychological pressure, physical abuse and even panic attacks (via El País).

Basinger’s choice would have been drawn by what Lyne later described as a “special vulnerability”, which would end up being exploited by the film’s direction and production, to take the erotic and submissive drama to extremes.

“It turns out that Adrian wanted me to react exactly how I reacted, because Elizabeth’s character was like that. A woman who didn’t play along, but was naive and later transformed by a man into what he wanted from her. This is the true story of Nine and a Half Weeks of Love,” Basinger told The New York Times.

Nine and a Half Weeks of Love is available for streaming in Brazil on Oldflix. Coming soon, more details about the screening in cinemas on A2 Films.
