‘The Asunta case’: Were the parents’ conversations true when they were detained?

The series “The Asunta Case”, based on true events, has captured the attention of the world audience in recent weeks by recounting the tragic murder of Asunta Basterra Porto, a 12-year-old girl who was found dead on the side of a road in Spain 11 years ago.

The conversations in the dungeons that rocked the series ‘The Asunta case’

Asunta’s adoptive parents, Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra, became prime suspects in the crime due to their statements. Although no direct evidence was found linking them to their daughter’s case, some recordings could be interpreted as confessions of their actions, we explain.

In the chapters of the Netflix production, it is seen how at one point in the investigation, the police decide to arrest the former Basterra couple in dungeons where they can communicate while facing each other in order to record their conversations and see if they said anything that would prove guilt of.

In this context some of their conversations immediately alerted the agents, as they gave the impression that they had not “removed evidence”.

“Rosario: You didn’t have time to do it, right? You didn’t have time? Alfonso: No,” is what they reported.

They later contacted each other again and seemed to be hiding something important that they didn’t want known.

Alfonso: Don’t say anything awkward because we’re being recorded. Everything we say or do, you’ve already seen, they take it as… huh? I say this for this reason. Rosario: Yes, but your feverish imagination will cause us a lot of trouble. Alfonso: Well, that’s why Rosario: Many. Alfonso: Silence.

The interactions between Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra were real

According to the “Antena 3” portal, these conversations were real and took place at the end of September 2013. They were copied exactly in the “Asunta Case” by the actors Tristán Ulloa and Candela Peña.

Although the police intended to use the sounds to incriminate Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra, they were not admitted as evidence at trial. However, they came to light and left the door open to many unresolved questions in the case.

Asuda’s parents assured that they had nothing to do with the minor’s murder, but they were still sentenced to 18 years in prison each. The question of what really happened on the day the minor died remains a mystery.

In social networks, the recordings have become topical and cause various discussions about the guilt or innocence of the Spanish couple.
