The last neighborhood of Porto Alegre is “flooded and forgotten”

Santa Rosa is located on the border of the capital of Rio Grande do Sul with Alvorada. Isolated, the population races to find their own solutions

Summary

The inhabitants of the Santa Rosa region, north of Porto Alegre, have suffered the floods and feel isolated, both geographically and in terms of official support. The region has several affected areas. They need clothes and supplies, especially water.

It is nothing new that the inhabitants of the Santa Rosa region, north of Porto Alegre, complain about the neglect of the public authorities and the press. During the flood, the population, without official support, united to help the victims and journalists did not report the tragedy of thousands of people on the border with the city of Alvorada.

The Santa Rosa region has several affected areas, such as the Fazendinha, Cappadocia and Nova Gleba occupations. Erick Dênil, 29, a native of the area, estimates that about ten thousand people have been affected in lower Santa Rosa.

He chairs the Center of Popular and Peripheral Culture, which provides assistance to victims. And he complains that, despite the necessary flood coverage in the center of Porto Alegre and other cities, “the northern canton is forgotten.”

Erick Dênil spoke to Visão do Corre.

Could you briefly describe the situation in and around Vila Santa Rosa?

We were hit very hard at the end closest to the dam, at the Feijó stream. On Tuesday the water stopped rising. The problem is that more rain will come. Few houses were not invaded, some had their roofs covered in water. The vast majority of residents withdrew. The families are very worried about their future. He’s desperate.

Why, despite intense coverage, does the press not address your situation?

Printing takes a long time to reach the North. We have always been forgotten, now would be no different. Although there have been many reports in several cities, in the center and in the exclusive neighborhoods of Porto Alegre, the situation is much worse. Ultimately, people are forgotten.

The fear of the inhabitants of the Santa Rosa region, north of Porto Alegre, is that the situation will worsen with new rains

What do you need most right now?

Bed linen, water – water is scarce –, mattresses and hygiene products. We have trouble getting baby clothes, diapers and sanitary pads.

Where have the region’s homeless gone?

Much of it for school accommodation. But there are many people who stay with friends and relatives and who also find themselves in difficulty. More structure is needed.

Is there any prospect of starting reconstruction?

We do not have. We are talking about forty days. The water in Guaíba dropped about twenty centimeters, without any impact. And the worst thing: it will rain. We are very afraid that the water will advance further.

Could something have been done to avoid what happened?

This tragedy could have been avoided or alleviated. Any very heavy rain floods the region. It is necessary to create a new water path, the Feijó stream wider and deeper so as not to overflow. And increase the size of the embankments. From now on, there is a high probability that this will happen again. It wasn’t a coincidence, there were predictions.
