Marie-Laure (Aria Mia Loberti) faces a frequent challenge since childhood: blindness. Despite this she has always had everything she needed and she lives in the company of her father and uncle. During 1940, the young Parisian found himself immersed in a serious conflict: the German conquest of France.
She and her father are part of a community that hates war and hates the idea of their country falling into Hitler’s hands. The two then begin to develop a clandestine radio program to contact all the French in the region and try to instill hope and courage in these people.
It is through this radio program that Werner (Louis Hofmann) meets her. He is also very young, born in Germany, and was forced to join the army to serve as a soldier. Werner has seen a lot of cruelty since then and also doesn’t like war, even though he is trapped by it. His task is unique: to identify the places from which the radio broadcasts originate. It is while searching for clandestine programs that he finds Marie’s broadcast.
Werner should have reported her right away, but hearing her inspire people to hope was what he needed too. Slowly Marie’s broadcasts become a symbol of resistance against German domination and the girl becomes a target for the soldiers. Then, Werner is given the mission to locate and execute her. Will she have the courage?
The miniseries can be seen on Netflix. In total, it has four episodes lasting more than 50 minutes each. Among the actors in the cast we can mention Lars Eidinger, Hugh Laurie, Mark Ruffalo, Marion Bailey, Luna Wedler and many others.
Anthony Doerr’s book was liked by the public and not for nothing did it win the Pulitzer Prize for literature in 2015. With the series debuting in 2023, many critics have praised everything from the performances of Mark Ruffalo and Hugh Laurie to the cinematography of the film . The plot’s ability to capture the audience’s attention and move them was also highly appreciated.
Despite this, there are those who say that the portrait of Nazism that the story deals with was very caricatured compared to what we read in history books. On Rotten Tomatoes the miniseries has an approval rating of 81%.
