Three athletes from the Brazilian rowing team gave up competing in the Pre-Olympics to help the victims of the Rio Grande do Sul flood Alef Fontoura, Evaldo Becker and Daniel Lima are working to save families and animals in the Moinhos de Vento neighborhood of Porto Happy . .




The competition will take place from May 19th to 21st in Lucerne, Switzerland. Among the Brazilians already qualified for Paris are Lucas Verthein, in the men’s singles, and Beatriz Tavares, in the women’s singles.

Evaldo Becker, athlete in the lightweight double category, says he had to give up his dream of the Olympics. The duo qualified for the Pre-Olympics after winning the repechage of the qualifying matches, held in Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, Rio de Janeiro, in March this year.

– Piedro and I chose not to go to the Pre-Olympics with our families and friends in the midst of this chaos – said Evaldo.

– We have guides and material to save more people, but at the moment we do not have a boat to continue our work – said Alef.

While the boat does not arrive, the rowers join the volunteers of the Grêmio Náutico União and work at the club headquarters in Moinhos de Vento. The three athletes are asking for help from anyone who can provide boats to help with rescue efforts in the region.
