Animal spotted in Serra da Canastra (MG)
Photographer Alessandro Abdala captured a giant armadillo in the Serra da Canastra National Park (MG), at the end of March. The beautiful images of the animal were shared on the photographer’s Instagram, who said he had waited almost 40 years to meet a “legend of the cerrado”.
“I have been visiting the Serra da Canastra National Park for almost four decades. Since my first forays, as a boy, it has always been a pleasure to travel through the vast natural fields in search of animals, landscapes and adventures. In the meantime, the search for a persecuted legend of the Cerrado,” Abdala reported on his Instagram.
“Decades of frustrated searches and I couldn’t lay eyes on him, the Giant of the Cerrado: the giant armadillo!”, he added.
The giant armadillo is difficult to spot because it is nocturnal and lives most of the time inside the huge tunnels it digs. Furthermore, it is a generally solitary animal, which loves warm and humid environments.
The giant armadillo can reach up to 1 meter in length and is considered by experts to be the largest armadillo in the world.
After seeing the animal, the photographer, accompanied by his friends @irmaos_pompeu, said he was in a trance, but was surprised to notice that the armadillo, in reality, is a docile and serene animal.
“Canastra took little notice of our presence, he paraded slowly and calmly in front of our objectives until he dived into the fog and disappeared into the sea of grass that surrounded us,” Abdala said.
