Volkswagen is already testing the new T-Cross pick-up in Brazil

Still in the early stages of development, Volkswagen’s new pick-up uses a Virtus mule and will have a unibody body with a 1.5 turbo engine

Volkswagen has already started testing its new pick-up in Brazil. This is what this Virtus spotted in São Bernardo do Campo (SP) by the journalist Renato Maia, of the Fala de Carro channel, indicates. Despite the sedan bodywork, it is a “mule” of the German brand’s new pick-up, which will have a unibody bodywork and should be launched by 2027 on the Brazilian market.

The hypothesis is confirmed by the changed proportions of the Virtus in the tests. In addition to strong camouflage, the unit has widened rear fenders and a wider track. The wheelbase also appears longer than the 2.65 m of the original Virtus. The new pick-up will have the same MQB-A0 platform as the sedan and T-Cross, and will be produced in São José dos Pinhais (PR).

Still in the early stage of development, the new Volkswagen pick-up would initially feature the Taos MQB-A1 platform and would be based on the Tarok concept, presented at the Sao Paulo Motor Show in 2018. With the pandemic, however, the original project came to an end set aside at the time and subsequently modified.

Externally, the truck will have a unibody body and dimensions similar to models such as Chevrolet Montana and Renault Oroch. The look should feature lines similar to those of Volkswagen SUVs and pick-ups. The interior should also maintain part of the finishes and layout in common with the T-Cross.

Under the hood, the new Volkswagen pick-up could be one of the first models equipped with the new 1.5 TSI engine, which will replace the current 150 HP 1.4 TSI with the arrival of the Proconve L8 polluting emissions standards, which come into force starting in 2025. The new engine will have Hybrid-flex EVO2 technology and should offer 150 HP and 250 Nm.

The difference is that the new engine has features such as cylinder deactivation – which helps save fuel – as well as the option of a variable geometry turbo. Volkswagen’s new pickup is one of four new cars the brand is preparing for Brazil until 2028.
