Italy brings the discussion on fentanyl to the G7 of Justice

In the midst of an “epidemic,” the Italian government has brought to the fore discussion of the synthetic opioid fentanyl, a drug that has put cities across the United States under a state of emergency and is already affecting several other countries on a large scale. The meeting of the G7 justice ministers was held in Venice.

During a press conference at the end of the summit, the Italian Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio, underlined that the world today finds itself “faced with two problems: artificial intelligence and the presence of a damned lethal and harmful drug, fentanyl”.

According to him, the drug is “malignant and lethal because a minimal dose is enough to kill a person or produce irreversible brain and physical damage, with a disproportion between the low production cost of the substance and the sales price, therefore with an extremely high cost” . profit.” interesting for organized crime”.

Nordio explained that “the United States has had a higher number of deaths from Fentanyl than those recorded during the Vietnam War”, considering that “more than 60 thousand people died in one year”.

“In Canada there is the same problem and unfortunately, as expected, drugs are also spreading throughout Europe”, he added, after the seven countries – Italy, USA, Canada, Japan, Germany, France and the United Kingdom – have declared “war” against the global threat of new synthetic drugs.

The Italian minister recalled that his country had “the first example of an investigation and everything indicates that we will have more”. For Nordio, “there are many ways to attack a nation: military, economic or financial, but there is also a way to undermine public health, especially youth health.”

In an attempt to block the criminal production chain of synthetic narcotics, the G7 governments intend to exchange information, intercepting chemical precursors and pill pressing machines, essential components for the synthesis of drugs.

Furthermore, there will also be an alert in the digitalized markets which see cryptocurrencies as one of the main exchange currencies for the purchase of fentanyl.

Finally, Nordio underlined that the G7 did not only talk about illegal substances, because “another problem these days is artificial intelligence”. He reflected on the distorted use and risks that AI can entail in the manipulation of information and images and can transmit in electoral choices.

According to the Italian minister, these issues and the fight against transactional crime and human trafficking will be the first topics to be discussed in the new “Venice Justice Group”, a permanent body created on the occasion of the summit, which aims to strengthen and coordinate initiatives on urgent matters. .
