The Flamengo coach will face Timão this Saturday. Alvinegro negotiated the arrival of the coach in 2023, who preferred the Cariocas
Corinthians will face Flamengo this Saturday (11th), at 4pm, at the Maracanã, in the sixth round of the Brazilian championship. However, the match will also mark Timão’s reunion with coach Tite. The former coach of the Brazilian national team will reunite with his old team after eight years and two negative signs to return to Parque São Jorge last year.
Tite left Corinthians in mid-2016 to take over the Brazilian team. It’s been just over six years and two World Cups at the helm of Brazil. At the end of 2022, the coach concluded his cycle and indicated that he would take a sabbatical and return to football only in 2024.
However, despite knowing that the coach would not work out in 2023, Timão approached Tite to make an offer. There were two denials, one at the beginning of the year, before the hiring of Fernando Lázaro, and one at the end of the year, when the coach rejected another proposal and Corinthians signed Mano Menezes.
The coach’s speech was that he would not return to work in 2023. Furthermore, the electoral process experienced in the club contributed to sending a negative signal. On 28 September, Corinthians announced Mano Menezes as manager. 11 days later, Tite was signed by Flamengo. The agreement with Rubro-Negro has generated discomfort among São Paulo residents and even a “breakdown of trust.
Tite’s passages to the Corinthians
Tite spent three spells at Parque São Jorge. In the first, in 2004, he managed to avoid relegation and qualified the team for the Libertadores. The following year, however, with the financial support that financed the hiring of several stars, such as Carlitos Tévez, Tite ended up being fired. In the second, between 2010 and 2013, he was a multiple champion and wrote his name in the history of the club, winning the Brazilian Championship (2011); Libertadores (2012); World Cup (2012); Paulista and Recopa Sul-Americana (2013).
There was still time to return for a third stint, in 2015, when he lifted another Brasileirão trophy. He left the following season, in 2016, to lead the Brazilian team.
This Saturday Tite meets Timão again after 15 years. In fact, in the last meeting between them, as opponents, Timão beat Internacional 2-1, in Beira-Rio, in a match valid for the 2009 Brasileirão.
However, the coach has a winning record against the team where he became an idol. In 13 matches against Timão, the current Flamengo coach has achieved seven wins, two draws and just four defeats.
