After the trilogy started in 2011 by Rupert White and expanded by Matt Reeves in 2014 and 2017, Planet of the Apes returns on May 8 with The New Kingdom.
Labyrinth Saga director Wes Ball took over, telling the rest of the adventure that takes place several generations after Caesar, the charismatic leader of the previous episodes.
Did the filmmaker launch a new trilogy with Noah, the hero of the New Kingdom played by Owen Teague? he asked ScreenRantWes Ball discussed the different directions the rest of the franchise could take. However, nothing has been officially launched yet.
“I think there are a lot of potential routes for this franchise. Let me say this. If I had a choice, and again it’s not up to me, I wouldn’t touch the 1968 version.
“Maybe we could make three more films, there’s a lot of history to explore.”stressed the director, who confirms that he does not want the saga to lead to a remake of the 1968 masterpiece with Charlton Heston.
Explore the saga
“We still have time to explore all of this. I think we can get to the point where a monkey looks up and sees a spaceship crash. Boom, black. We’re back at the beginning of the universe. Film from 68, and we close the loop. I think that would be the best way to end the saga.”– Wes Ball confided.
The director also spoke to ScreenTime about what happened next: “I really hope we can make more movies because there are still unanswered questions. Can humans and apes live together? Can they coexist? That’s the whole point of the saga. Noah and May’s relationship will definitely be crucial for the future. .He believes.
“You can imagine a lot of drama and conflict, and can the relationship between these two prevent terrible things from happening? Or can they be the cause of those terrible things? It all makes for a very dramatic, Shakespearean story.”
For his part, screenwriter Josh Friedman, who notably worked on the Avatar sequels, didn’t write the New Kingdom trilogy in mind. “What I can say is that we made sure that we developed the characters in the best possible way. he explained on AlloCiné’s microphone.
A saga of nine films?
“That way, if other films come out, a lot of possibilities can be explored thanks to the work we’ve done. We’ve paved the way, and if a new film comes out, we can start from a good foundation.”he concluded.
The producers, on the other hand, have had a huge vision in mind since taking over the reins of the franchise in 2011, with no less than nine feature films! “I have nine films in mind”Rick Jaffa explains to our colleagues at The Hollywood Reporter. “I don’t know if we’ll make it to nine. We’d love to.”
His partner Amanda Silver adds: “We thought it was extremely ambitious. But here we are with four films. (…) It’s really interesting to work on a franchise that is so quietly subversive in its own way, that has something to say and asks questions.”.
And Jaffa explained: “With New Kingdom we really feel like we’ve set the stage for two more movies with these characters. But we’ll see. A lot also depends on how the audience reacts.”.
As of now, nothing is official, we will have to see if The New Kingdom is successful before considering a sequel. The previous three films grossed $1.2 billion at the worldwide box office.
