The most recent episode of the third season of “The Boys” drew attention for including an interaction between the Black Noir hero (Nathan Mitchell) and animated animals.

Airing Friday (7/1) on Amazon Prime Video, the chapter used animation to manifest Black Noir’s traumatized personality. The storyline also showed what turned him into a hero who never talks and never takes off his mask, showing, through animated staging, how Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) warped him into ultraviolent combat.

“I love the fact that we’re revealing who he is, I love the way we’re doing it even more,” The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke told Variety.

Kripke revealed that the animation studio Six Point Harness was responsible for the “‘Roger Rabbit’ of it all,” which is the creation of the animated characters and their interaction with Black Noir. Describing pets that only the hero can see as adorable, the producer says the extra sweetness helped create contrast in scenes where they appear to be violently injured.

“They’re adorable, right? I wanted it to be like ‘Snow White’ directed by Martin Scorsese,” explained Kripke. “As if they were adorable Disney characters, but undergoing anatomically correct exposure to physical violence. It’s a bewildering combination.”

The producer said Black Noir would see these animated characters from the start of the series: “They’ve been around you all this time.” But audiences only get a taste of it now, because that’s when the hero is processing his biggest trauma: the disfigurement at the hands of Soldier Boy.

“We wanted to explore Noir’s origin story and really reveal who he was and where he came from,” said Kripke. “And in the flashbacks, he was a handsome young superhero with aspirations to be the next Eddie Murphy, but that ended when he was targeted by Soldier Boy, in such an extreme way that it really warped him. And in our minds. , once put on the mask, he rarely takes it off, embodying a Darth Vader. “

The next episode will also be the last of the third season of “The Boys”, which airs Friday (8/7) on Amazon’s streaming service.
