Ricardo Nunes presents the RS flag, the statue of Saint Paul and the Palmeiras shirt to Pope Francis

The mayor of Sao Paulo is spending the week in the Vatican to meet Pope Francis and attend a seminar on climate change

Invited to a seminar on climate change in the Vatican, the mayor of Sao Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), landed at the airport of Rome, Italy, on the morning of Tuesday 14th. Upon his arrival, he recorded videos to show on social media gifts that he will deliver to Pope Francis and other objects that are to be blessed by the leader of the Catholic Church.

Nunes carried in his suitcase a statue of St. Paul, the apostle for whom the capital of St. Paul is named, and two images of Our Lady of Aparecida, the Catholic patron saint of Brazil. The objects return to the city and one of the images of the Madonna will be donated to Rio Grande do Sul, which is experiencing a climate catastrophe. The Gaucho flag was also brought to the pontiff to grant him his blessing, one from the city of Sao Paulo and another from Brazil.

The mayor will also have to give Pope Francis a t-shirt from the Brazilian team and one from Palmeiras, a club he supports, autographed by the athlete Endrick with a dedication to the religious man. The Pope is a football fan and his team, the Argentine San Lorenzo, plays in Palmeiras’ group in the Copa Libertadores this year.

Nunes also made replicas of Vila Reencontro, a space to house the homeless in São Paulo, and the Pateo do Collegio, where the Jesuits built the city’s first building, in the 16th century.

The meeting with the Pope is expected to take place on May 16, the anniversary of the death of his predecessor in office, Bruno Covas, who died in 2021 due to cancer. Covas’ son, Tomás, accompanies the delegation, also composed of the secretaries of Climate Change, José Renato Nalini, and of Institutional Relations, Enrico Misasi, and the head of cabinet, Vitor Sampaio.

The councilor takes over from the interim mayor

Nunes left on the afternoon of Monday 13th and is expected to return on Friday 17th. The mayor’s trip to the Vatican promoted musical chairs in the São Paulo City Council and handed over the interim role to councilor Atílio Francisco (). Republicans), who is an authorized bishop of the universal Church of the Kingdom of God. After accepting the position, the parliamentarian is automatically excluded from running for office in the October elections.

The seminar is entitled “From the climate crisis to climate resilience” and was organized by the Pontifical Academies of Sciences (PAS) and Social Sciences (PASS) of the Vatican, linked to the Catholic Church. The event will take place from 15 to 17 May. According to City Hall, the invitation to Nunes is one of 20 distributed by the entities to governors of major cities around the world.

Nunes participates in two panels, according to the event program, together with mayors of cities such as Valencia (Spain), Yokohama (Japan) and Milan (Italy). The idea is to present actions to expand vegetation cover, through the opening of parks and other green areas, and to reduce carbon emissions, such as electrification of the bus fleet.

“We will have a very important participation here, to place the city in this context and show its work on the topic of climate change, environment and sustainability, and we will also have a meeting with the Pope,” the mayor said in a video posted on Instagram.
