HPI on TF1: Does Mehdi Nebibu (Karadek) really speak sign language?

HPI makes a big return this Thursday, May 16 on TF1 for the 4th season of the phenomenon police series. Viewers’ chance to find Morgan (Audrey Fleurot), Karadek (Mehdi Nebibu) and the whole team in new investigations that promise to be just as crazy.

And in the first episode, the two teammates must investigate the murder of Alexandra Collette, a 42-year-old stay-at-home mom who maintains a close relationship with her deaf son. In order to interrogate him, Karadets begins to speak in sign language.

A polyglot actor

In the season 3 finale of HPI, viewers discovered that Karadec could speak many foreign languages. The German, the Russian and the Italian, apparently, had no secret from him.

At that time we revealed that Mehdi Nebibu, like his character, is a true polyglot who speaks French as well as English, Italian and German. The actor actually lived in Berlin for many years, doing odd jobs.

He then worked as a holiday village host in Tuscany for three years. After training as a carpenter in Milan for two years, he returned to Berlin, where he studied directing at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin.

In 2005, Mehdi Nebibo was cast in Hollywood for Steven Spielberg’s Munich, and in 2008, he starred for Ridley Scott in Lies of the State. An eclectic career that allowed him to master many foreign languages. But does this also apply to sign language?

Mehdi Nebibu and Sign Language

Unfortunately, the actor revealed in an interview that this was not the case. “I studied for the episode” he explained on AlloCiné’s microphone.

I would love to know the language. But it made me want to persevere, because there’s a whole world of opportunities that aren’t available if you don’t speak the language of deaf and dumb people. I find this way of communication very fascinating. But no, it was someone who taught me the specific cues of this scene.”

Catch HPI Season 4 this Thursday, May 16 at 9:10pm on TF1. Previous seasons are already available on the TF1+ platform.
