‘The Guardian of the Monarchs’: Karina Alvarado breaks silence after being compared to Karla Panini

Netflix continues to give something to talk about with its releases, be it for its entertainment content or to raise awareness in society about an event.

On May 9, the documentary “The Guardian of the Monarchs,” which deals with the disappearance and death of Homero Gómez González, was released on the streaming platform. He was a famous Mexican activist who dedicated his life to protecting the monarch butterfly sanctuary in Michoacán until he was found dead in January 2020.

The 91-minute documentary shares the work Homero Gómez has done to preserve the forests where monarch butterflies arrived after migrating from Canada, which have been plagued by private interests and criminals who threaten to destroy their habitat.

Through various interviews we learn what happened in the case of Homero Gómez from the voices of his family, his friends and even some of the politicians who were by his side the day he disappeared, showing photos of Elizabeth Guzmán, Jorge Arroyo, Octavio Ocampo and Karina’s. Alvarado, who were public officials.

Elizabeth Guzmán shared that Karina Alvarado took Homero’s phone and iPad, which she allegedly left on one of the tables during their last meeting after a horse race, and gave them to her photographer Jorge Arroyo, who was murdered shortly after the activist disappeared. During the interview, the politician claims that Karina filed a restraining order, and at the end of the documentary it is revealed that she did not want to give an interview, which sparked a series of accusations against her.

After the statements of Elizabeth Guzmán, a virtual attack was immediately launched against Karina Alvarado, who had to limit the comments on her social networks.

After a week of constant hate messages, Karina posted a video on her TikTok account and Facebook to clarify several points about the Netflix production, pointing out that there are several inaccuracies in the information she was given.

“I had the good fortune to meet him and work with him when I was the head of the tourist agency in the east. I visited the sanctuary a lot, mostly because of the display and propagation during the monarch butterfly season. Homer was my friend, we got along very well, there was respect and whenever he went we stayed together and ate,” explained Karina.

Karina explained that she did not participate in the documentary because she was contacted through social networks and the approach “was not clear”, so she refused to appear in the project in question.

On the issue of protection, the councilor shared that this never happened, denied that she took Homer’s things, ensuring that it was another colleague named Jorge who took them, and denied that he was the photographer or her assistant, but confirmed that he “disappeared” for reasons beyond Homer’s control.

“I participated and cooperated with the law, I gave my statement to the Prosecutor’s Office, as it should be done when something like this happens. “They checked my mobile phone and it was concluded that I had nothing to do with this event,” he said.

Talking about all the messages and comments she has received in the last few days, Kareena changes her tone and claims that she has received threats on her life.

“I’ve been horribly attacked on social media, they’ve flooded Facebook with very aggressive comments… that’s why I’m here giving my stand. They’re texting me ‘you’re going to die’, they’re messing with my friends, my family, they’re ‘They’re intimidating, they’re very strong messages.’

Karina’s video has more than 600k views on TikTok alone and she also blocked all kinds of comments, the same action she did on her Instagram account, but Facebook is where they continue to question her statement.
