When Jake Sully first arrived on Pandora in Avatar, evil had a human face: Stephen Lang’s Miles Quaritch. The ruthless military commander of the RDA (aka the Resource Development Administration) was the big villain of the original film: a menace in a robot suit who hated the Na’vi and chewed cigars. Last time he met a rocky end when Neytiri hit him with a couple of giant arrows on the last reel. But Avatardeath is not always the end, and in the path of waterQuaritch is back in blue.
Yes, in the long-awaited sequel, Stephen Lang returns in the same role, this time in Na’vi form, whose consciousness has been added to the body of an avatar. “It’s bigger, it’s bluer, it’s angular,” he laughs as he speaks Empire. “But there can be an aspect of humility. When you have two Na’vi arrows in your chest, it will have some sort of effect on you. It’s not just Quaritch that got a big blue update. the path of water, the RDA has a whole set of Recom, also known as Recombinants – avatars encrusted with memories of human soldiers. A completely new body means a completely new Quaritch. “[He] he was always a character who moved in a straight line and at right angles, ”says Lang.“ But now he’s as agile as he looks. He can move with the same kind of cunning and savage quality as any Na’vi.
The arrival of the Recom is just the beginning: the return of RDA means business. “They come back with an army to reclaim the precious asset they lost,” jokes producer Jon Landau. This time around, they’ve built a whole new city, Bridgehead, and they’re taking resources from Pandora’s oceans and have a 3D printing facility that releases weapons, which means they’re even more equipped this time around. “It’s RDA scale,” Landau promises. The war for Pandora has just begun.
