Boxing’s heavyweights have a new “king.” Oleksandry Usyk faced Tyson Fury this Saturday (18th) in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) to try to unify the belts in the most noble category of the sport. In an exciting and hard-fought fight, the Ukrainian had a chance to KO the Englishman, but defeated him by decision of the judges and won all the titles of the division.

With important guests such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar, the duel had everything to become a potential classic and so it was. Against a much bigger and heavier opponent, Usyk had to use a strategy in which he had to immediately put pressure on the “King of the Gypsies”, managing to field good combinations and preventing Fury from reacting to his play.

The Englishman entered the fight from the third round onwards, especially with his uppercuts, which showed up just as the fight was heading into the middle rounds. In the sixth round, Fury began to take control of the fight, landing well with body shots and uppercuts, leaving Usyk, who was more offensive in the opening half, starting to feel the pressure.

And the “King of the Gypsies” would remain in the lead, but would soon receive a “reality shock” in the ninth round. The Ukrainian once again gained space in the ring and, starting with a well-aimed combination, arrived with a powerful right “bomb” that shook the Englishman. Then another combination, this one with the left hook which almost put an end to Riad’s fight, with the Englishman ending up on the ropes.

Fury managed to survive the referee’s count and continued in the fight, managing to use a straight right in the tenth round that really bothered Usyk. The last rounds were real exchanges between the two, electrifying the arena and leaving doubts as to who would take home the victory and the belts. In the end, the Ukrainian won the fight by a split decision of the judges (two gave the victory to him and one to the Englishman) and became the “king” of heavyweight boxing.

– I thank my team. It was a great fight, it was really good – Usyk said after the fight, according to MMAFighting.

If the new unified heavyweight champion was rather sparing in his statements, Fury chose to consider himself the winner of the fight, believing he had won more rounds than his rival and has already highlighted the possibility of a reunion between the two in the ring for the end of the year.

– I think I won the battle. I think Usyk won some rounds, but I won most of them. We fought a lot, we gave our best. His country (Ukraine) is at war, so people sided with whoever is at war, don’t get me wrong, I won that battle. We will return. There is a clause that gives the right to a rematch. See you in October,” he declared.
