The Brazilian judoka lost to Mongolian Akhzaya Lavjargal in the Golden Score in Abu Dhabi
Brazilian judo came very close to winning its first medal at the World Championships in Abu Dhabi. This Monday, Rio Grande do Sul’s Daniel Cargnin took fifth place in the men’s lightweight (73kg) division, Brazil’s best performance so far in the competition. In the bronze match against Mongolian Akhzaya Lavjargal, he took the worst of punishments and secured 720 points in the Olympic ranking, which guaranteed him the first seed at Paris 2024.
Cargnin starts with a good attacking rhythm and soon manages to force two free kicks on Lavjargal, but the Mongolian recovers and manages to equalize the score. In the golden score, with both men hanging, the Brazilian attempted a tackle, which the referee defined as a false attack, and received the third penalty, finishing the World Cup in fifth place.
This was Cargnin’s second bronze at the World Championships, in the cycle in which he decided to move from -66kg, the category in which he was an Olympic medalist at Tokyo 2020, to -73kg. In 2022 she won bronze in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Brazil still had Willian Lima and Jéssica Lima on the mat
Brazilian judo had two more representatives on the mat on Monday, who failed to advance to the final block.
Willian Lima (66kg) debuted with a free kick win over Turkmenistan judoka Serra Rakhimov. In the round of 16 he faced a more difficult opponent, the Japanese Ryoma Tanaka. He managed to impose his judo and forced two free kicks from the Japanese, who also responded to the free kicks and got the better of the Brazilian in interpreting the refereeing (3-2).
In the women’s group, Brazil was represented by Jéssica Lima (57 kg), who fell in the first round against the Turkish Hasret Bozkurt. Jéssica managed to achieve a waza-ari at the beginning of the fight, but the Turk turned the score around with two throws that scored two waza-ari in her favor.
The Abu Dhabi World Cup continues this Tuesday, with four Brazilians in action: Ketleyn Quadros (-63kg), Nauana Silva (-63kg), Guilherme Schmidt (-81kg) and Gabriel Falcão (-81kg).
