Google Maps experiments with a new design with three tabs in the bottom bar of the Android application which collect the tools most used by the public
An application update Google Maps for Android is being tested with a portion of the public and features a new design with a reduction in the number of tabs in the bottom bar. The goal of the change is to facilitate access to the tools people use most and offer more intuitive navigation through the app. The change does not eliminate any features of the application, it simply reorganizes and brings together the “new” and “saved” resources within the “You” tab.
- Google Maps shows weather forecasts for locations on Android
- Google Maps will have generative artificial intelligence to act as a tour guide
The new feature appears in version 11.127 of Maps, currently available to a limited portion of the public. Google has not provided an estimate on when the update will reach all users.
New bottom bar on Google Maps
The new design being tested on Google Maps reduces the bottom bar from five to three tabs, with access to the main features of the application. Are they:
- Explore: Focused on exploring new places with information on nearby points of interest, restaurants and tourist attractions;
- You: section that collects lists of favorite places, previous visits and other user preferences;
- Contribute: Space to add reviews, photos, and other contributions to help the Google Maps community.
Despite the reduction in the number of tabs, all previous functions remain available in the application: the “You” tab integrates resources that were distributed in other sections.
Rounded brim
This isn’t the first time Google Maps has introduced a new design for small groups without releasing the update to everyone. In February the app tested a version with rounded corners in navigation tabs when using the guidance functions on routes and public transport.
It is possible that the choice to test the design on small groups was aimed at verifying the behavior of the public before consolidating the new structure. OR Canaltech did not have access to the changes when updating the application to Beta version 11.129.
