Warning, spoilers. The following paragraphs reveal plot elements from the first episode of The Bridgerton Chronicles Season 3.

Bridgerton fans have finally been able to discover the first part of the third season, which is available starting May 16 on Netflix. These first four episodes set up one of the most anticipated pairings for readers of the Julia Quinn novels from which the series is based.

The romance between Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) finally takes shape and the two best friends listen to their hearts and realize that there is more to them than friendship.

But this realization took time. If Penelope always secretly loved Colin, Bridgerton’s third son understood her true feelings only when he tried to help his friend find a suitable husband, which made him jealous of the suitor Lord Debling.

Penelope and Colin finally admit their feelings for each other

We have to wait until the end of the fourth episode for Colin to finally confess his love to Penelope in the carriage that takes them home after the ball, where young Bridgerton prevents Penelope from accepting a marriage proposal from Lord Debling, who has heard that something. It was going on between the two.

After confessing his feelings to her, Colin kisses Penelope sensually in the carriage. And both of them were captivated by their passion, to the point where they shared their first moment of intimacy before they reached Bridgerton’s house. Colin comes out there and asks her to marry him.

“It was an exciting scene to write because it’s the culmination of not just four episodes of anticipation and tension, but the two seasons leading up to it.”new showrunner Jess Brownell told AlloCiné.

This is an important scene from Julia Quinn’s novel, but is different in the TV series. Indeed, in this book, Colin Bridgerton discovers that Penelope Fetherington is actually Lady Whistledown, Bridgerton’s “gossip girl”. And he chooses to marry her because he loves her and because he wants to protect her.

In the series, he doesn’t know her secret yet. “It felt very early in the story for him to know the truth, but we still wanted to honor that important moment as the moment where he starts to see Penelope in a different light.”Jess Brownell explains.

Colin and Penelope’s first moment of intimacy

After two seasons of friendship, Penelope and Colin finally reveal their feelings for each other and rediscover each other from a different perspective. Friendship gives way to love, passion, sensuality, and they share their first intimate moment of kissing and foreplay in a carriage. A moment that Nicola Coughlan, Penelope’s translator, had dreaded from the start, as she told us:

“I was still thinking about it in the second season, because it was something that was going to happen in the near future, it was very intimidating. But in practice, luckily, we have a great friendship, a lot of trust and respect for each other, which allows us to communicate really well.

We also had an amazing intimate coordinator who really made us feel like we were in control of these scenes and we really wanted to make them so good. This was a great driving force for us. “

For Luke Newton, who plays Colin Bridgerton, it was important to keep the humor and lightness of the friendship between Colin and Penelope even as they fall in love, because that’s what makes their duo so strong:

“We also wanted to have fun because it really represents their friendship and their relationship, are they having fun with each other? And we think people appreciate that in them and identify with them. That sexuality, but also have fun with it and make them laugh and play together.”

After this first sequence of Colin and Penelope getting physical in the first episode, fans are expecting their relationship to take a completely different direction. But we’ll have to wait for the second installment of Bridgerton’s third season — which airs June 13 — to find out.
