The Gramado Festival keeps the date despite the floods of Rio Grande do Sul

Despite the floods that hit Rio Grande do Sul in May 2024, the date of the Gramado Film Festival is kept for August.

The organization of Gramado Film Festivalone of the most important cultural events in Brazil, has announced that the 52nd edition of the award will take place in the next few days From 9 to 17 August in the city of Rio Grande do Sul. There was speculation that the event would be canceled or postponed, as the city of Gramado was one of the places affected by the floods that hit Rio Grande do Sul in May. In total, more than 1,600 people living in the city have had to leave their homes since the beginning of the month.

Given this scenario, it is not yet certain that the site will be rebuilt to host the festival nor that Porto Alegre airport will already receive flights. It is worth remembering that Gramado does not have an airport, so to get there you need to disembark in the capital and take land transport or go directly by land. As a matter of urgency, the National Agency for Civil Aviation (ANAC) has authorized the Canoas air base, in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, to receive commercial flights.

Despite this, Rosa Helena Volk, president of Gramadotur, the authority responsible for events in the city, was confident in the resumption of Gramado’s cultural life. “We are working hard to make this recovery possible, with particular attention to the audiovisual workers affected by the tragedy,” she says.

Due to the climate crisis, entries for the Legislative Assembly Film Award – Mostra Gaúcha de Curtas and Mostra de Longas-Gaúchos have been postponed until May 26.
