We know this: The Boys series is full of winks and other Easter eggs in both the Marvel universe and DC Comics. But that’s not all! The seventh episode of the current season 3 also paid tribute to the legendary Hollywood actor, as the creator of the program Eric Kripke confirmed on his social media.
During this episode 7, a short clip from the movie is shown on the screen, in which the boy soldier appeared. Cigarette in hand and hair up, the latter sings in a raspy voice while a young woman spins in the background in the lush setting of a tropical paradise. This sequence paid tribute to the album performed by Robert Mitchum titled Calypso is like that.
My favourite #SolderBoy moment. Robert Mitchum really released a Calypso album, REALLY sung with Caribbean patois. crazy! I’m obsessed! That’s how I wanted it @JensenAckles To sing one of the songs and I was madly focused on recreating the image. #Boys #TheBoysTV @TheBoysTV pic.twitter.com/SC8tTgJ01G

Essentially known to the public for his acting career, Robert Mitchum was also a successful singer with two albums. Released in the mid-50s Calypso is like that – intended as a tribute to the Caribbean – is full of songs with misogynist overtones, interpreted in an unintentionally parodic Caribbean way, not to mention authentically racist. The authentic musical vessel that Eric Kripke wanted to recreate through the soldier boy character is definitely the best choice to interpret such tasteless hits.
The final episode of The Boys Season 3 can be seen this Friday, July 8th exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
