The Cannes competition continues with the presentation of Italian Paolo Sorrentino’s new film, Parthenope, in which, among others, Gary Oldman takes part. This drama follows the heroine’s search for happiness in 1950s Naples, her love for the city at first sight, and her encounters with many memorable characters.
On the Croisette, the Parthenope received a nine-minute standing ovation, and actress Celeste Dalla Porta, who was considered a revelation, was particularly applauded. This film is Paolo Sorrentino’s seventh feature film to be presented at Cannes.

What do festival participants think?
with #ParthenopaPaolo Sorrentino signs the subject of the film with the same incredible beauty as its actor: a story closer to the mythological and picaresque, where a woman deified by the male gaze embarks on an inner journey through her experiences.#skin2024 pic.twitter.com/NV8YA0lZT3

The most beautiful woman in the world, an allegory of Naples, a goddess among men… #Parthenopa Sorrentino’s is a little bit of everything at once.
A ballad of absolute beauty, but whose length is staggering and the feminine point of view is illusory with the Italian’s masculine. #skin2024 pic.twitter.com/RshmoJ1BxV

The more I think about it, the more so #Parthenopa Sorrentino leaves me cold.
A beautiful empty shell, as luxurious as can be, but still empty.
Boredom is important… pic.twitter.com/JMcQnVGbJ8

“Partenopa” is exquisite, one of the best of the competition. Paolo Sorrentino juxtaposes Naples at its most summery and vivaciously with a young woman’s search for self (the haunting Celeste Dalla Porta) in a treatise on cinematic beauty. #skin2024 https://t.co/JZntnyjhhu

“Parthenope is exquisite, one of the best films in the competition. Paolo Sorrentino combines Naples at its most summery and lively and a young woman’s (seductive Celeste Dalla Porta) search for herself in a treatise on cinematic beauty..”
#skin: Paolo Sorrentino returns with a delightfully lavish film that blurs the lines between the sacred and the profane until sex feels like religion and religion feels like sex.

“Paolo Sorrentino returns with a wildly lavish film that blurs the lines between the sacred and the profane until sex looks like religion and religion looks like sex.”
Produced by Saint Laurent, Parthénope is a (much) too long posed soft porn fashion clip where every line of dialogue is taken from a small dictionary of philosophical quotes for amnesiac students whose main character might be named Malegazia. #skin2024 pic.twitter.com/iWqH8URBpb

has #skin2024, Paolo Sorrentino presents one of his most beautiful films. “Parthenope” draws on the legend of the Neapolitan mermaid to paint a sumptuous portrait of a woman and an ode to Naples in the form of an opera. Beauty and loneliness magnified by staging pic.twitter.com/KVaTqCZruj

“Beauty is like war: it opens all doors.”
Sorrentino’s Parthenope dazzled me with the beauty of its imagery and characters, bringing a touch of humanity to a long dysfunctional world and society.
A masterful film… pic.twitter.com/r0mwvl68QM
