Director Marcelo Caetano evaluates passage through Critics’ Week; debut in Brazil takes place in the second half of 2024
After debuting in the competitive show of 63rd Cannes Critics Week, Babyin Marcelo Caetanowon the prize for Best New Actor for the protagonist Ricardo Teodoro. The plot that takes place in São Paulo reveals the story of Wellington (João Pedro Mariano), a former prisoner, and Ronaldo (Ricardo Teodoro), a male prostitute, who meet in a porn cinema in the city center.
An inattentive look can get caught up in the relationship between the protagonists and forget the delicacy and power that is the script of a São Paulo for the marginalized. And it is precisely the delicacies of the margins in which the lives of Wellington and Ronaldo are located, also permeated between the traps of survival, adaptation to the world of prostitution, the deprivation of a more welcoming social structure and the immensity of their dreams that set the tone of the film – which models in audiovisual form the chronicle of the hostility of a chaotic, harsh big city that is saved by constructed affections. Baby is a work that addresses the tensions of male bodies between affection, control and power, weaving the text, already known to many, which involves desire, sex and visceral love, passing through scenarios common to gay male life in large cities, such as saunas and porn cinema.

The director himself Marcelo Caetano evaluated the visit to the traditional French festival:
“I think the film had a very good response, both from the international press and critics and, in fact, what was most beautiful was seeing how warmly the film was received by the public. It’s really beautiful to see people talking about Baby on the street, congratulating the actors, it couldn’t have been better, right? I think every director’s dream is to launch their film in Cannes, it’s an unparalleled exposure and reception, so we got the best of all worlds for this film.”
In Brazil, the film will be released in the second half of this year and should appear at a festival. The information comes from Felipe Lopes, from Vitrine, responsible for distribution.
“Baby is a powerful film, with an incredible cast (and with Ricardo Teodoro award-winning!) and which has the power to move and generate identification with a large audience! This is our second partnership with Marcelo Caetano and we want Baby have a much greater reach on the big screen.”
“Baby” is an official Brazil-France-Netherlands co-production and featured public resources managed by National Cinema Agency (Ancine) and the support of Aide Aux Cinémas Du Monde, Center National Du Cinéma Et de L’Image Animée and the Institut Français. It was produced with the support of Hubert Bals Fund (HBF) of the Rotterdam Festival and the Netherlands Film Fund (NFF). It is a co-production of Spcine, Telecine, Canal Brasil and Vitrine Filmeswho also signs the distribution.
