“How do you say you love, but kill those you love for love?” is the uncomfortable question that stands out in “O Cravo ea Flor”, in the new single by Tribo da Periamo, released this Friday, on all streaming platforms – which also has a music video and is now available on YouTube. The song will be the theme of the fight against feminicide in a campaign promoted by the Public Prosecutor of the Federal District and Territories (MPDFT).

“I have been living and singing rap since 1998, and we have always spoken openly, protested, joined forces to fight against the system and face the evils and injustices of the suburbs. As much as we seem to have forgotten, rap still has this mission. And there’s no one better to speak to the community than rap. I believe that no other musical style can have as much freedom in talking about a topic like this. Let us unite, denounce and publicize this force against femicide and domestic violence to create a better world for our women, children and families. Not just in the suburbs, but across the country, as this is a crime without race, creed or class, affecting all spheres of our society,” Duckjay says.

The song is based on true stories. The statistics are there. Cases of femicide are only growing in Brazil and when Tribo da Periphery was invited to participate in this campaign, unfortunately Duckjay had a large amount of material to work with. From the many news published throughout the national territory, to the cases that he followed closely. In the lyrics of the song he also alludes to the popular song “O Cravo ea Rosa”, a children’s song that was romanticized as if it were a contest of strength.

The creative direction of the music video also follows a real and very illustrative line of how domestic violence affects a family and impacts an entire community who can no longer shield their eyes using the speech ‘in a fight between husband and wife, no one chooses the spoon’, thus sending the message of a change in perception.

“This is a necessary song, a necessary video. Our goal is for this work to reach as many people as possible. Reality shocks you, puts you in a difficult situation. It is not simply a crime, it is something devastating not only in the lives of those who suffer this atrocity, but in the lives of the entire family who are destroyed by this loss. Women are the symbol of life and femicide is, literally, the opposite,” concludes Duckjay.

Traveling for 26 years, Tribo da Periphery, one of the most important names on the national rap and hip hop scene. The numbers are impressive. There are more than 8.9 million subscribers on the official YouTube channel and more than 3.4 billion views on the platform, something unprecedented for rap and hip-hop artists in Brazil. There are more than 3.2 million monthly listeners on Spotify, 2.2 million followers on Instagram and 5 million on Facebook. The history of Tribo da Periphery was born in the roots of the Federal District, in 1998, when Luiz Fernando Correia da Silva, better known as Duckjay, decided to take the first step towards this dream, composing his first musical lyrics. Since then, the Tribe has taken on new forms and gained new protagonists, such as Look (Nelcindo Lustosa Rodrigues), who has continued alongside Duckjay since 2016, connecting more and more people. Organized by Kamika-Z Produtora and with shows across the country, Tribo da Periphery draws crowds wherever they go.
