In 2014, Marvel released a new film directed by James Gunn with characters that were not the most popular outside of the comics, namely the Guardians of the Galaxy. It featured the first adventure of the group that originally consisted of Star-Lord (Peter Quill), Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Groot and Drax.

After its success, a sequel was confirmed where new characters were introduced. Then, in 2023, the third part of the series arrived, which focused on showing the sad story of the beloved Rocket, his battle with his enemy the High Evolutionary and how he almost lost his life.
After defeating him, it proved to be the end of the group as it was known, as its original members disbanded and Rocket became the new leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy, a group consisting of Groot, Kraglin, Cosmo, Adam. Warlock, Blurp and Phyla-Vell.
This change gave the opportunity to see a fourth installment of the film in the future. For answers, fans turned to the director of all three feature films.
It turns out that Gunn is known for using his Twitter account to interact with his followers and answer some questions about his upcoming projects. That’s when, through this social network, several netizens asked him if there will be a fourth installment of Guardians of the Galaxy and he simply replied with a “No”.
Why isn’t James Gunn making ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 4’?
Although many have not understood why Gunn refused to create a new story for one of Marvel’s most beloved franchises, the answer is quite simple: he became the co-director of the DCU, alongside Peter Safran, which means that he is in charge for new film projects in the DC universe.
That’s why the filmmaker, for now, has no relationship with Marvel and is focused on direct competition.
Given this scenario, it is likely that this will be the end of the story of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the cinema, since in the next phases of the MCU no project with these characters is foreseen. However, it is hard to believe that the company would abandon a franchise that has gained a very loyal fan base.
