It’s a long story between Chiara Mastroianni and Christophe Honoré. They are already working together with Marcello Mio for the seventh time, but for this project the actor will step into the shoes of his father, the Italian Marcello Mastroianni.
A story about identity crisis and belonging, the film features a variety of actors in their respective roles. Among them: Melville Pupo, Benjamin Biolay, Fabrice Luchin, Nicole Garcia and Catherine Deneuve, mother of Chiara Mastroianni.
In competition at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, Marcello Mio generally won the press – averaging 3.7 out of 5 on AlloCiné – and divided festival goers. How many audience* came to the theater to discover it?
They liked it
According to Rob Cowell (5 out of 5):”The film, with its unique blend of melancholy and lightness, manages to touch the heartstrings. Leaving the session, I felt deeply moved and overwhelmed by the beauty and emotion that came from this unique and original work. Honoré has a great understanding of cinema and reminds us why we love cinema.“
According to Luke D. (5 out of 5):”A very successful comedy led by a group of actors at the top of their art. A film that is aimed at both film buffs and the general public !”
According to Chris (4.5 out of 5):”A very great Christophe Honoré who remains true to his world. Chiara, playing the dual roles of Chiara and Marcello Mastroianni, is breathtaking. His resemblance to his father is truly uncanny. Deneuve, who plays Deneuve, is amazing in a role where she plays like never before with her image..”
According to Pagnoladi (4.5 out of 5):”What aliens! What a fascinating film! What a wonderful actress! Marcello Mio takes his time to follow the path of Chiara Mastroianni, in search of himself and his father, between the sun of Rome and the night of Paris. A soft and light film like Daho’s song but deeper than it seems.”
Cinema 28 (4 out of 5):”The script, a little strange, gives way to simple and authentic emotion. After all, we are having a good time. The melancholy is softened by images of glorious Paris and Rome and a great soundtrack. Perfect for calming anxiety, you’ll find yourself a little revved up, not quite sure why.”
They didn’t like it
According to Olivier K. (2 out of 5):”Starting with an interesting concept, this script does not take a fascinating plot far from it. There remains a kind of fetishistic feeling, in the footsteps of the great films of the past. The film takes place half at night and it is lit, hence the softness of the image, which is quite ugly..”
According to PLR (2 out of 5):”It is typical to be annoying and boring to yourself. Of course, for relatively erudite moviegoers, this will be an opportunity to recall some of the great films and roles of this Marcello, the real one (that is, the father of the actor of the same name and the daughter of Catherine Deneuve).“
According to Mat Niro (1 out of 5):”Often impressed by the films of Christophe Honoré, I found this very eye-opening and constantly highlighting our hero’s neuroses. Furthermore, what is billed as a comedy is primarily aimed at an audience with solid cinematic credentials (I was alone in the room) to raise a smile..”
According to Chillout And Relaxing (1 out of 5):”In the end, there is very little emotion in watching this film, which is navel-gazing and not very innovative to say the least. Except for the boringness and length of this movie. 2 hours to finally say so much… a piece that was definitely meant to be a tribute quickly devolves into antipathy and clannishness. A pleasant disappointment.“
According to Jean-Jacques D (0.5 out of 5):”No emotion and a lot of boredom watching this navel-gazing tale of cinema, Fellini’s pseudo-plagiarism, but Fellini’s not supposed to.”
