Laila Grimaldi wins the silver medal at the U17 World Championships

Saturday (25) was a medal for Brazil in the U17 World Weightlifting Championship. The country reached the podium with Laila Grimaldi in the snatch. In the women’s 81kg category of the competition, held in Lima, Peru, the athlete won silver in the snatch with 90kg lifted, behind only Lidysmar Alfonzo, from Venezuela, who won gold by lifting 94kg. Third place went to the Italian Sara Dal Bo, who however equaled the Brazilian’s score with more attempts.

Laila Grimaldi initially lifted 87kg in the snatch, setting a new Brazilian under-17 record, surpassing her own mark of 86kg. On the second attempt, he increased the load to 90kg and, once again, successfully lifted it, unifying the national records for the under-17s and under-20s. The previous under-20 mark, 89kg, belonged to Beatriz Martinho and had been established in 2022. In the third attempt, the Brazilian athlete risked 92 kg, but was unsuccessful.

New national records

In addition to the silver and three national records in the snatch, Laila Grimaldi achieved four other relevant scores. In the clean and jerk, the Brazilian had 95 kg as a starting weight and began the competition with 101 kg on the bar, lifting without difficulty and equaling her previous national record in the under 17 category. She then went up to 106 kg, but failed on the first attempt, subsequently succeeding and setting new national records for under 17s and under 20s, beating Beatriz Martinho’s 103kg.

With a total weight of 196kg, Laila Griimaldi set the under-17 and under-20 national records for her weight group. She finished the event as the fourth best in the world in her age and weight group. “From the moment I knew I was coming to the World Championships, I knew it would be an honor and a dream come true. To be able to compete and feel so good was incredible, because I wasn’t nervous at any point, even though it was my first World Cup, I felt the light loads and it’s really like I’m dreaming,” the athlete said.

In the clean and jerk competition, the top step of the podium was occupied by the Italian Sara Dal Bo, weighing 117 kg. In second place, with 112 kg, was Sanja Ormanbayeva, from Kazakhstan, and in third place was Lidysmar Alfonzo, from Venezuela, with the same 112 kg. In the full load, Sara Dal Bo won gold, with 207kg, followed by Lidysmar Alfonzo, silver, with 206kg. Finally, the bronze went to Sanja Ormanbayeva, with 201kg.
