Eight years after Ready Player One, his last sci-fi film, and three years after The Fabelmans, Steven Spielberg presents his new film. We still don’t know anything about this feature film, but it’s a movie based on an alien movie based on an original idea from a filmmaker. Spielberg co-wrote the screenplay with his co-star from Jurassic Park and World of Worlds, David Koep. Universal recently announced that the sci-fi film will hit theaters on May 13, 2026.
Spielberg’s return to making a sci-fi feature is great news, following the cult aliens Close Encounters of the Third Kind, ET the Extra-Terrestrial and War of the Worlds. These three films were huge box office successes and had a profound impact on the history of science fiction cinema. Steven Spielberg has played a major role in this genre, not only with his Alien films, but also with science fiction such as Minority Report, AI Artificial Intelligence, Jurassic Park and more recently Ready Player One.
Steven Spielberg’s other projects
Winner of 3 Oscars (Best Picture and Best Director for Schindler’s List in 1994 and Best Director for Saving Private Ryan in 1999 – which hits theaters June 6), Steven Spielberg is currently working on several projects as a producer.
He will most notably collaborate with Martin Scorsese as an executive producer on the Apple TV+ television series based on Scorsese’s 1991 film Nerves. The director is also producing a 7-episode series on Napoleon based on Stanley Kubrick’s unfinished work.
He’s also behind Lee Isaac Chung’s new film Twisters, director Gareth Edwards’ Jurassic World 4, and Josh Singer’s remake of Bullitt alongside Bradley Cooper.
His Alien movie will be his next production, as the projects “This Is What I Do” and “The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara” have apparently been abandoned by the filmmaker, who has not discussed these films since their announcements in 2015 and 2016.
