The X-Men are back in a big way and are on everyone’s lips thanks to the great success of the animated series “X-Men ’97”. Launched in 2024, the attraction is the revival of an old animated series starring Marvel’s mutant heroes and was very well received by audiences and critics.

However, this isn’t the first time an X-Men cartoon has succeeded. Inspired by this, we decided to present all the animated series based on the X-Men released to date.

And as a bonus we’ll let you know which of them are available to watch on streaming services in Brazil. Check it out below!

This was the first television animation based on the X-Men. However, it is only a pilot episode. For those who don’t know, a pilot is an initial episode created to demonstrate the concept and potential success of a new television series. It helps producers and networks decide whether to order more episodes.

However, the series that this pilot intended to launch ended up not coming to fruition. This was due to the financial problems faced by Marvel following the sale of Marvel Entertainment Group in 1989. The new management decided not to move forward with the project.

In the plot of the 22-minute episode, Kitty Pryde/Black Lynx is recruited by the X-Men. Additionally, the Brotherhood of Mutants, led by Magneto, attempts to steal the mutant brain energy circuit from the Xavier Institute.

While “Pryde of the X-Men” did not lead to a full series, it inspired the popular arcade game “X-Men,” released by Konami in 1992.

The second adaptation of “X-Men” into an animated TV series was “X-Men: The Animated Series.” And this time the feat was successful. With 5 seasons, the cartoon was acclaimed by critics and audiences.

The series was faithful to the comics and raised serious topics such as prejudice and social issues. The attraction featured the mutants Cyclops, Wolverine, Rogue, Storm, Beast, Gambit, Jubilee, Jean Gray and Professor Xavier.

This was the childhood of many Brazilians. “X-Men: Evolution” is inspired by the first editions of the original comics and portrays the X-Men as teenagers, unlike the previous “Animated Series”.

The episodes follow Professor Xavier and his more experienced partners as they recruit young mutants, training them to control and keep their powers hidden from society. Teenagers attend school and face different challenges. The design has 4 seasons.

The fourth adaptation of the “X-Men” into a television cartoon, “Wolverine and the X-Men” was not as successful as the previous two. The series only has one season and is little remembered.

In the plot, the X-Mansion explodes in a mysterious and devastating way. Then, Professor Xavier and Jean Gray end up disappearing. This event causes trauma to the X-Men team, which ends up disbanding. From that point on, Wolverine tries to reunite the X-Men and becomes their new leader.

The anime “X-Men” has 12 episodes. In the storyline, the X-Men mourn the death of Jean Grey. Professor Xavier reunites the heroes to travel to Japan after the kidnapping of the mutant Armor and face those responsible: the U-Men, who are kidnapping young mutants to harvest their organs.

The aforementioned hit “X-Men” cartoon in the introduction, “X-Men ’97,” is a revival of “X-Men: The Animated Series” and follows the story of its characters.

The new design tries to maintain the 2D style of “The Animated Series”, while giving it a slightly modernized look.

Its plot takes place a year after “The Animated Series.” The episodes follow the X-Men without their leader, Professor Xavier. The team is now led by their former adversary Magneto.
