In Capeside, Dawson discovers the quirks of adolescence and sees his relationship with Joyce and Pacey, his lifelong friends, tested.
Dawson, a series created by Kevin Williamson with James van der Beek, Michelle Williams, Carrie Holmes, Joshua Jackson…
If you were a teenager in the late 1990s, you probably want to go back to Capeside, Massachusetts for a throwback. And if you didn’t grow up watching Dawson, now is the time!
1. A beautiful story of friendship and more
Dawson begins with the friendship story of three high school students, Dawson (James van der Beek), Joey (Katie Holmes) and Pacey (Joshua Jackson). Of course, the show would later become famous for creating one of television’s greatest love triangles, as Joey’s budding romance with Pacey Witter would jeopardize his friendship with Dawson. The narrative surrounding the emotions of this first love is worth a detour for both accurate and meticulous description.
2. Kevin Williamson is a creator
Behind Dawson is a certain Kevin Williamson. She became famous worldwide in 1996 by signing Wes Craven’s Scream script. And he became the author of other iconic films of the time, such as Remembering… Last Summer, The Faculty or even Miss Tingle (with Katie Holmes) which he also directed. It’s funny how his horror blooms, and with Dawson, a hundred thousand leagues from this terrible atmosphere. But Dawson Lear’s character may be someone who has ambitions to become the next Steven Spielberg.
3. Still an iconic actor
Twenty years later, actors are still part of the audiovisual and cinematic landscape. James Van Der Beek made his film debut in a role opposite Donson’s in Laws of Attraction. We can see him in a pose recently. Joshua Jackson has continued his career mainly in television with Fringe, The Affair and last year’s Doctor Who. We’ve seen Katie Holmes in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins and as Jackie Kennedy in the Les Kennedy miniseries. It is Michelle Williams who has the most prestigious career and has become one of the muses of independent cinema. In Kelly Reichardt, opposite Ryan Reynolds, in Blue Valentine or in the drama Manchester by the Sea, he is recognized everywhere.
4. Social issues
Kevin Williamson didn’t hesitate to tackle strong and serious themes at a time when we still believed that teenage series should maintain some form of innocence. Here, on the contrary, the heroes confront life’s issues with all the seriousness that is sometimes necessary. At the end of six seasons, these teenagers were faced with big questions. It was about cancer, death, drug problems, but also about homophobia. The themes are delicately approachable, almost avant-garde at the time and still relevant today.
5. Classic in the teenage series
Ultimately, Dawson is truly one of the most beloved storylines in television series history. More than any other teen drama of the time — except for Angela, who was 15 before it, but only for one season — the series appealed to all the teenagers who have the often hard-to-find wit on television. These characters were brilliant and charming while still only teenagers.
Dawson leaves the Netflix catalog on July 14.
