The Tricolore ends the group stage, undefeated, for the first time in ten appearances and reaches 14 matches without losing in the continental tournament
Fluminense beat Alianza Lima 3-2 in a well-played match at the Maracanã and achieved an unprecedented feat in its history in the Libertadores. Thus, the Tricolor finished the group stage undefeated for the first time and, as a bonus, increased their streak to 14 matches without losing in the competition.
The last time Fernando Diniz’s men lost in the continental tournament was on June 7, 2023, the year they won the unprecedented title. At the time, despite the title, the team failed to triumph over River Plate at the Monumental de Nuñez and went away with a 2-0 defeat. Since then there have been nine wins and five draws.
In their first two appearances with the Libertadores, in 1971 and 1985, Fluminense failed to advance and stopped at the group stage. On their debut in the competition, they were defeated by Deportivo Itália, of Venezuela, and Palmeiras. Fourteen years later, they lost three more times, twice against Argentinos Juniors, champions of that edition, and once against the Argentine Ferro Carril.
Tricolor campaigns
In 2008, the Rio club returned to the tournament in style, with a consistent season and a wound that remained open for fifteen years after the final defeat on penalties. In the group stage, Renato Gaúcho’s men lost to Arsenal, from Sarandí, 2-0, in Argentina. In fact, at the Maracanã, a 6-0 defeat remained in the fans’ memory.
From 2011 onwards, Fluminense made three consecutive appearances, but suffered defeats in the group stage in all of them. The first were against Nacional and América de México, away from home. In 2012, they had their best season in the group stage, but lost to Boca Junior, at Nilton Santos. The following year they faced Grêmio, in Rio de Janeiro, but reached the round of 16.
Eight years later, the Tricolor returned to compete in the tournament and again lost a match in the group stage. This time, for Junior Barranquilla, at the Maracanã. In 2022, he was eliminated in the preliminary round and ended up not participating in any groups of the tournament. Last season, the year of the unprecedented title, Fluminense lost in the group stage against River Plate, in Buenos Aires, and against The Strongest, in Bolivia.
Finally, in the current edition, Fernando Diniz’s men achieved four victories (two against Colo-Colo, one against Alianza Lima and one against Cerro Porteño). Furthermore, they drew with the Paraguayans, in Asunción, and with the Peruvians, away from home.
