Cavani retires from the Uruguay national team

Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani of Boca Juniors announced his retirement from the national team on Thursday.

Champion of the 2011 Copa América, Cavani, 37, is the second player to have worn the Uruguay shirt the most (136) and the second best scorer (58), behind Luis Suárez, having made his debut in the 2-1 to 2 with Colombia in a friendly match in February 2008.

“They have undoubtedly been many precious years, I would have a thousand things to say, count and remember, but today I want to dedicate myself to this new phase of my career and give my all where I need to be,” Cavani wrote on Instagram.

“Today I decide to take a step aside, but I will always follow you with my heart beating fast, like when I took to the pitch wearing this beautiful shirt.”

At club level, Cavani won six Ligue 1 titles and five French Cups with Paris St Germain between 2014 and 2020. He scored 200 goals in all competitions for the Parisian club.

Cavani also played for Napoli, which won the 2011-12 Italian Cup, and for Manchester United. He joined Boca Juniors in July 2023 after leaving La Liga team Valencia.
