Alison dos Santos sets the best time of the year and surpasses the world record holder in the Diamond League

The Brazilian achieves 46s63 in the 400 meters hurdles during the Oslo stage and keeps expectations high for the Paris 2024 Olympics

Alison dos SantosPlus, this Thursday he gave yet another demonstration of being a strong candidate for gold in the 400m hurdles at Paris-2024. The Brazilian set the best time of the year in the second stage Diamond League and won the 400 meters hurdles in 46.63, leaving behind the favorite and Norwegian world record holder Karsten Warholm, who was competing at home – in Oslo -, and came second in 46.70.

In the most anticipated race of the day, Warholm took the lead and held the lead in the first 200 meters, but was caught by Piu in the final straight, a few meters from the finish line, after stumbling slightly. Third place went to Kyron McMaster, of the British Virgin Islands, with 48s49.

The result placed the Brazilian in first place in the Diamond League season standings, with 16 points. This was the eleventh time Piu and Warholm faced each other on the track and only Piu’s second victory against the world record holder.

Piu’s two victories over Warholm are emblematic: the first at the 2022 World Championships, when he won gold and the Norwegian only finished seventh, in which he was recovering from an injury; and the second this Thursday at the Norwegian’s home, just under two months before the Olympic Games, where they should meet again in the fight for gold.

The Brazilian surpassed the milestone achieved in the inaugural phase of the 2024 Diamond League, held in Doha, at the beginning of May. At the time, Piu won easily and scored 46.86, the best score of the season up to that point: the fifth best of his career and the 16th best in history.

The result also sealed the surpassing of the meeting record he held, of 47.24, obtained in the 2022 edition. At the time he had left behind CJ Allen, second with 48.39 and the Frenchman Wilfried Happio, third in the race with 49.10 . .

Brazil’s hope for a medal at the Olympic Games, Piu remains in the final stretch of preparation, after a year marked by a knee injury in February 2023 and the surgery he underwent. There were five months left until the competitions until his return to the track in the second half of 2023. In 2024 he made his debut with the victory in the 400 meters of the “Florida Relays” tournament with a time of 45s25.
