Netflix has released the trailer for The Bottom of the Family, a new romantic comedy starring Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, Joey King, Lisa Kosh and Kathy Bates, from the producers of Everything But You.
The film follows Zara Ford (Joey King), a young woman who discovers that her single mother Brooke (Nicole Kidman) is having an affair with her older brother Chris Cole (Zac Efron), a self-centered movie star. The Bottom of the Family marks the third collaboration between Efron and Kidman following 2012’s Lee Daniels’ infamous Paperboy, which brought them back together for The Butler the following year.
A new trend in Hollywood?
The theme of older women and younger men is being revived after the popularity of The Idea of Being With You on Prime Video, starring Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzin, which begins with a Les Dessous de la famille-like tone.
“I’m starting to feel things I’ve never felt since your father died“, Brooke confesses to her daughter – absolutely desperate for this confession – in the trailer. Zara responds by yelling at her mother: “No! You didn’t say that!“
Regular Netflix users
Joey King has become a mainstay of the Netflix catalog since his portrayal of Elle Evans in The Kissing Booth trilogy. Efron’s first appearance in a Netflix production was in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, where he portrayed serial killer Ted Bundy. He then got his own reality TV show, Down to Earth with Zac Efron, in 2020. Kidman’s first and only appearance in a Netflix film was Ryan Murphy’s The Prom in 2020.
Although originally slated for a November 2023 release, The Bottom of the Family, directed by Richard LaGravenese, was pushed back to 2024 due to writer and actor strikes that paralyzed the entire Hollywood industry throughout 2023.
The Underneath of the Family will be available starting June 28 on Netflix.
