Director Mike Flanagan will direct The Exorcist Deceiver (no name in Portuguese), the second film in the reboot trilogy that began in 2023 with The Devotee.
Known for directing successful horror films such as The Haunting of Hill House (2018) e Midnight snack (2021), Mike Flanagan already has another project to direct soon. It’s about the movie The Exorcist: The Deceiver (The Exorcist: The Deceiver, in free translation), the second film in a reboot trilogy that rebooted the iconic horror franchise.

The first feature, The Exorcist: The Devotedwas directed by David Gordon Green (from the franchise Halloween) and released in 2023. But contrary to what the producers imagined, it was a box office and critical flop. The general opinion is that it did not bring interesting innovations and did not do justice to the franchise.

The plot, in fact, does not present any surprising twists, as well as having weak scares and a very predictable plot. The only problem is the participation of Ellen Burstyn who reprized her role as Chris MacNeil, mother of Regan, the possessed girl in the original film. Flanagan therefore has a great challenge ahead of him: to bring the public back to the cinema and propose an excellent plot that will bring back interest in this trilogy.
In an interview with Variety, he commented on the opportunity to try his hand at the saga and also underlined how happy he is to work again with Blumhouse, the production company responsible for the films. Shut up: death listens (2016) e Ouija: origin of evil (2016).
“The exorcist It’s one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it’s an honor to have the chance to try something new, bold and terrifying in your universe.”
It’s worth noting that, with Green’s departure from the trilogy, the script for the new film was uncertain. This is because the former director wanted to make two direct sequels, but Flanagan has to go another route. Jason Blum, CEO and founder of Blumhouse, was confident in this change, however.
“Mike’s voice and vision are indispensable to horror fans and we are thrilled to welcome him back to Blumhouse. I immediately responded to Mike’s new approach to the world of horror. The exorcist and I can’t wait for audiences to experience it.”

What is the story of the Devotee?
In The Exorcist: The Devoted a widower named Victor (Leslie Odom Jr.) takes care of his daughter Angela (Lidya Jewett) alone after his wife’s death. After dropping her off at school, the girl and her friend Katherine (Olivia O’Neill) disappear without a trace and return only three days later, with no memory of what happened and with strange behavior.
Not knowing how to deal with the situation, Victor searches for the only person in town who witnessed something similar; Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn), Reagan’s mother (Linda Blair), a girl who suffered from demonic possession and had to undergo an exorcism. From that moment on, a race against time begins to banish the demon and save the girls’ lives, but Father Phillipse (Antoni Corone) fears that it will only be possible to save one of them.
Even with this interesting hook, The devotee it doesn’t even come close success of the original plot launched in 1974 and directed by William Friedkin. It now remains to be seen whether Flanagan will have enough creativity to change this reality.
