Tom Holkenborg was responsible for the soundtrack for ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’
Tom Holkenborgknown as Junkie XLwas responsible for giving rhythm to Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. “The song is commenting on how Furiosa sees the Wasteland and what’s happening to her,” he explained in an interview with Variety.
The musician admitted that he incorporated elements of artificial intelligence into the soundtrack: “I used AI to make deepfake voices from another voice. Actually, I wasn’t going to use it for the voices, but what if the sound source was a drum rhythm, while the final sound was a guitar?”
“But the software doesn’t know what to do with it. So it gave us a happy accident that we used in the score,” the composer continued.
Pulse
The pulse sound was created with a Buchla synthesizer. The instrument was used to reproduce heartbeats, with a rhythm that varied from “fast to uncontrollable, even hesitant, at times, like palpitations, to echo Furiosa’s heartbeat”.
Nature
To reflect Furiosa’s Green Place origins, Holkenborg used a wooden instrument called a duduk. “It comes from the earth, you feel the sand in your hands”, said the artist.
The Australian instrument didjeridu was also part of the songs and was played by William Bartonwho is part of the aboriginal community.
“We clearly see that the saga takes place in Australia. When we approach Green Place, it becomes very clear that we are in the middle of the country”, he pointed out Holkenborg.
