of the new Godzilla
Released in Japan in November 2023, the film had a much smaller budget than usual, between $10 and $15 million, as well as a team of just 35 visual artists. Written and directed by Takashi Yamakazi, Godzilla minus one is set at the end of World War II, after the United States’ nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The film follows a kamikaze pilot named Kōichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki), who did not have the courage to complete his mission and, therefore, believes he is living in dishonor in the middle of a country devastated by the largest conflict in the history of planet. . Shikishima then decides to land on Odo Island and becomes one of the few survivors of Godzilla’s attack.
In addition to being a film about the giant monster’s new origins, the film discusses both the question of guilt and the need for the hero and the Japanese themselves to take the lead in rebuilding after the war and dealing with the new threat.
