The Baixada team disappointed their fans by playing badly and being defeated 2-1 in Londrina
With a performance well below expectations, Santos disappointed its fans by being defeated 2-1 by Botafogo-SP in Londrina this Monday, in a match that continued the eighth round of the competition. This is the second consecutive defeat for the team led by Fábio Carille, who wasted the opportunity to return to the helm of the team. Serie B of the Brazilian championship.
The setback keeps Santos on 15 points and in third place in the table. Goiás occupies first place (17), followed closely by vice leader Avaí (16). Botafogo, who started the match from bottom, reached seven points and is in 16th place.
The initiative to hand over control of the match to the city of Londrina, with the excuse of exploiting the club’s brand in the region (in addition to receiving a financial compensation of around 600 thousand reals), did not have the desired sporting result.
Santos tried to play at home at the Café Stadium against Botafogo-SP, but found it difficult to stifle their rival, who adopted a defensive attitude and relied on counterattacks to surprise Fábio Carille’s team early on.
The first good chance of the match came from a mid-range shot by Diego Pituca. João Carlos made a partial save and, on the rebound, Willian Bigode wasted the chance to move the scoreline into a very clear chance.
As time passed, Santos began to show discomfort with the 0-0 draw and, in a desire to put pressure on their rival, ended up creating space behind him. And it is precisely with a movement on the right that Botafogo opens the scoring.
Douglas Baggio finds space for the shot and, with his left leg, hits the corner of the Santos goalkeeper, who is unable to reach the ball: 1-0 in the 43rd minute. In an immediate response, Santos hit the Botafogo post, but had to suffer a deficit on the scoreboard at the end of the first half.
On the way back, Botafogo tries to complicate the situation even more. In the 5th minute, with a nice run, midfielder João Costa risks a mid-range shot and after five minutes he takes the lead to 2-0.
The biggest advantage on the scoreboard meant that Ribeirão Preto’s team gave up the match and Santos rose. Relying on pressure and physical imposition, Fábio Carille’s team moved forward and began to accumulate scoring chances.
Joaquim became more attacking and, with his header, hit the crossbar. Santos continued to persist and, again with his defender, reduced the count. With another aerial ball, the Santos defender, in the six yard box, pushed the ball into the goal and made it 2-1 in the 28th minute.
The pressure remained and Botafogo continued to defend with all players in defence. Hayner missed another clear chance, but his lack of aim complicated Londrina’s search for an equaliser. In the end, Toró came close to scoring the third goal on the counterattack and Ribeirão’s team managed to win by suffocation.
