Computex2024 | AMD reveals MI325X and two other Instinct GPUs for artificial intelligence

AMD Reveals Instinct MI325X AI Accelerators Coming in Q4 2024 and Announces Two New Generations MI350 and MI400 for 2025 and 2026

In the wave of AI adsTHE OMG presented its second generation of AMD Instinct AI accelerators during Computex2024. The MI325X GPUs are expected to hit the market in the last quarter of 2024, and the company also announced that the MI350 and MI400 generations will arrive in 2025 and 2026, respectively.

The new MI325X has 288GB of memory HBM3e memory with a bandwidth of 6 TB/s, respectively 2x and 1.3x greater than, already reformulated, NVIDIA Hopper H200. In terms of computing power, they offer 30% better performance than the H200, but for now AMD has not mentioned the costs of implementing the GPUs.

The architecture of the new accelerators is still CDNA3, from MI300Xbut the next MI350X, scheduled for 2025, will feature the CDNA 4 architecture, with an estimated result of 35 times better than the current one in inference tasks.

Race for the AI market

AMD is apparently investing aggressively in the artificial intelligence sector, clashing with NVIDIA, even in very high performance segments. The strategy differs from that adopted by Intelwhich is aimed more at entry markets, offering AI solutions with an excellent cost-benefit ratio, but which still aim for the range dominated by NVIDIA H100.

“AMD Instinct MI300X accelerators continue to be adopted by numerous partners and customers, including Microsoft Azure, Meta, Dell Technologies, HPE, Lenovo and others, a direct result of the exceptional performance and value proposition of the AMD Instinct MI300X accelerator. With our annual product updates, we bring a relentless pace of innovation, delivering the leading capabilities and performance that the AI industry and our customers expect to drive the next evolution of AI training and inference in data center,” said Brad McCredie, Corporate VP of Data Center and Accelerated Computing at AMD.

The problem is that the new NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs will also hit the market in late 2024offering huge performance compared to the Hopper 100 and 200. Therefore, it is very likely that AMD’s portfolio will be able to serve slightly more demanding markets, but will still be far from meeting the demands of customers at the cutting edge of artificial intelligence, with OpenAI.
