Why didn’t Jeremy Renner return to act in Mission: Impossible?

In the franchise starring Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner played William Brandt in two films: Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation

Not just in superhero franchises, but Jeremy Renner also appeared in some classic spy sagas, such as the Mission Impossiblestarring Tom Cruise. With two films under his belt, the actor did not want to return for a third feature.

It is worth remembering how Renner interpreted William Brandt in Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011) and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015). In the two most recent films, Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018) and Mission: Impossible – Reckoning Part 1 (2023), he did not reprise the role.

During podcast interview Happy Sad Confusedthe 53-year-old artist revealed how he was actually invited by the franchise’s producers to play the character Brandt in Fallout Effect, but was told it would be filmed for a week. In 2018 production, Brandt would be killed.

“I remember how they tried to bring me overseas for a week so they could kill my character, and I was like, ‘No, you can’t do that. You’re not going to drag me there and just kill my character, like, get out of here! ‘”, recalled the actor. “If you’re going to do this and use my character, you’re going to do it right.”

I played with [o diretor Christopher McQuarrie]: ‘Dude, you’re not going to do this to me like that, you’re not going to hurt me.’
