In 2018, actor John Krasinski stepped behind the camera to direct the sci-fi film Quietly, in which a family tries to survive the threat of mysterious creatures that attack at the slightest sound. Based on the concept of the film, Krasinski had to make his film all about direction and sound. In particular, he enjoyed testing strategies for drowning out the sounds of everyday life:
“I started hearing everything from the clinking of knives and forks on plates to the sound of shoes dropping to the floor when you pick them up. It even became a kind of game at home: me and my wife, we tried to be quiet and if one of us made the slightest noise, we had to turn to each other as quietly as possible and say ‘die’ at the end, it was very good preparation.”
Voiceless also has another peculiarity: it includes only 25 dialogues. The first script contained only one! This is explained by the characters not being able to communicate, but because the couple’s daughter, played by the wonderful Millicent Simmonds, is deaf. Therefore, they communicate in sign language. Practical when you need to shut up.
A successful franchise
The sequel, which has been repeatedly delayed due to the global pandemic, will see the light of day in June 2021 with equally ruthless monsters. Saga “Soundless” has earned more than 600 million dollars worldwide. A nice jackpot for Paramount Studios, who greenlit the sequel.
