Anne Hathaway needs no introduction. But before reaching world fame thanks to his most iconic film – The Devil Wears Prada (2006) – the American actor multiplied slightly more private projects. One of them, Ela in Enchanted Land, is an alien on its journey and will soon leave the Netflix catalog.
This parody of fairy tales is an adaptation of a children’s book by Gail Carson Levin (Ella Enchanted), which adopts the main codes of the genre. The latter in particular relies on Cinderella to represent a young woman who will try to free herself from an unfortunate curse.
At birth, little Ella received the gift of obedience. Due to this unfortunate situation, he cannot resist any request and often lives at the mercy of unscrupulous people. In order to regain control of her life, Ella embarks on a quest for freedom. He must face a kingdom filled with ogres, giants, evil stepmothers, talking books, and evil conspiracies. And, hopefully, he’ll find love along the way.
One day my prince will come
From an enchanted stepmother to two stepsisters who taunt her, including a godmother who transforms her into a princess for the duration of the ball, Ella takes the main themes of Cinderella in Enchanted Land, but turns them into mockery. And it was successful. A feature film is a guilty pleasure that we watch without moderation.
Anne Hathaway is a feast for the eyes and ears in this comedy, where she also provides the voice (we’ll let you discover her musical number to Queen). He, who was only 21 years old at the time of filming, has already shown that he is just as good at comedy as he is at drama or music.
In terms of casting, Ella in Enchanted Land offers quite an eclectic cast with Hugh Dancy as Prince Charming, Cary Elwes (the unforgettable Princess Bride), Minnie Driver and Joanna Lumley…
